What Is GDM and Why Does It Matter?
Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) affects up to 18 million pregnancies each year, according to the World Health Organization. Though it usually resolves after birth, GDM is more than a temporary condition — it's a powerful early indicator of future Type 2 diabetes and long-term health risks. As rates rise, it's straining health services and exposing deep inequalities in care. But it's also a critical opportunity: with the right support during and after pregnancy, we can reduce future risk, improve outcomes, and close gaps in maternal health.
