What Is GDM and Why Does It Matter?
Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) affects millions of pregnancies each year, with the World Health Organization estimating up to 18 million cases annually. Whilst it often resolves after birth, GDM is more than a temporary condition β itβs a powerful early indicator for future Type 2 diabetes and long-term health risks. As rates continue to rise, GDM is placing increasing pressure on health services and exposing deep inequalities in care. But it also presents a critical opportunity. With the right support during and after pregnancy, we can reduce future risk, improve outcomes, and close gaps in maternal health.
